To fully understand the brevity of this day lets delve into the historical context for this significant military date and when it was first celebrated. The consensus belief amongst scholars for the origins of the U.S. Marines dates back to November 10th, 1775 and was established in Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia under the commandant of Samuel Nicholas. After the Revolutionary War in 1783, the Continental Marines were dissolved only to be re-established on July 11th, 1798 by President John Adams who saw the important void that must be re-filled. In 1921, the Marines half-heartedly celebrated the July 11 date until avid historian, Major Edwin North McClellan sent a memorandum to Commandant John A Lejeune, suggesting that Marines celebrate the original November 10th date and to declare the date a Holiday for all members of the Corps to celebrate. To this day, we continue to honor the Marines and cherish everything they have sacrificed for our country.
